When British experimental rock phenoms black midi announced their hiatus, listeners wondered where the band’s fragmented brilliant minds would land. For bassist and vocalist Cameron Picton, the answer lies in a stunningly warm, acoustic-driven universe under the moniker My New Band Believe.

Released on April 10, 2026, via Rough Trade Records, the project’s self-titled debut album is a sharp, elegant departure from the chaotic math-prog of Picton’s past.

Instead of abrasive guitar screechings and jagged rhythms, My New Band Believe delivers a rich, pastoral, and almost entirely acoustic landscape. Draped in sumptuous strings, fluttering woodwinds, and delicate piano arrangements, the album feels closer to a theatrical, post-punk mutation of chamber-folk.

To build this organic sonic maze, Picton collaborated with key figures of London’s contemporary Windmill scene, featuring contributions from members of the experimental collective caroline and Black Country, New Road.

From the cinematic, fairytale-like opening of “Target Practice” to the beautifully bare, piano-led romance of the single “Love Story,” the 8-track album explores the hazy borders between feverish dreams and reality. It is dynamic, unpredictable, yet deeply comforting—an essential listen for anyone seeking intentional, boundary-blurring songwriting.

Ultimately, My New Band Believe stands as a captivating testament to Picton’s versatility as a songwriter. By trading chaotic math-rock for delicate, textured chamber-folk, he has delivered one of the year’s most intriguing and rewarding independent releases.
